Transition Practices that Work for Gifted Middle School Learners in Preparation for High School
Limited Capacity seats available

Although students are at increased risk both academically and emotionally during times of transition, little attention is often given to how to make these transitions more successful for the students we serve.  This session is designed for those who support students transitioning between middle school and high school, with a particular attention given to how to support 8th grade students on ALPs. We will provide an overview of the different programming options for High School charters and DPS managed schools. We will also discuss the DPS Transition Day and will review ideas for an 8th grade spring transition and progress monitoring for 8th grade ALPs including how to transition these students for more self directed ALPs that elicit more student advocacy and participation.

A short introduction to the Rethink platform that will set your students up for success for the 2019-2020 school year.  In this training, you will be shown how simple it is to create a student profile and track IEP goals (academic & social-emotional) with a visual analysis (i.e. line graph) so that you are prepared to show progress towards mastery at your student’s annual IEP.

Root Cause Analysis of Academic Issues to improve IEP goals and services
Limited Capacity full

Determining the root cause of an academic discrepancy is critical to determine the most appropriate IEP goals, services and interventions. With a handful of simple screeners and a process to organize the data, the root cause can be easily revealed. Once the root cause has been determined then interventions matched to the students’ processing deficit can be implemented. This presentation will focus on the underlying processing disorders for language arts and math that can hold back our learners and interventions matched to their needs.

Transition Practices that Work for Gifted Elementary Learners in Preparation for MiddleSchool
Limited Capacity seats available

This session is designed for GT Elementary School Teachers who support 5th grade students on ALPs. Come get an overview of the different programming options for Middle School charters and DPS managed schools. After a brief overview of the how to work with transitioning students from elementary school ALP goals to middle school ALP goals.  This session will work on the premise that in elementary school student and GT Teacher collaboration is about a 25 to 75 participation framework. The teacher is doing about 75% of the progress monitoring and supporting ALP goals. In middle school that should be more of a 50/50 collaboration framework with the student taking on more responsibility and ownership of the goal and progress monitoring. At high school this shifts again to 25 -75 with the student owning 75% of these goals, progress monitoring, and ALP development.

Vertical Teaming in K-8 Math & Beyond: Ensuring our Strongest Math Students Are Challenged and Prepared for High School Upper Math Classes
Limited Capacity filling up

Are your 6-8th grade math students getting the challenge they need to be prepared for upper level math in high school? For all the success stories in math classes around the district, here’s a concerning data point (that might be the tip of the iceberg for underserved students): Only 1 DPS African American student passed AB Calculus in 2019. In this session, we’ll show you how to build data-driven ALP's and programming for your math students along with ways to backwards plan from high school math classes through placement tests, aligned courses, etc. Hamilton Middle School doesn't have it all figured out, but it's been sending a good chunk of its students (many undeserved) right into sophomore and even junior high school math classes.

This presentation will focus on the underlying processing disorders for language arts and math that can hold back our learners and interventions matched to their needs.
